Among my projects is FiberGraf, a collaboration with graffiti artist, HENS. When we met in 2008, we quickly discovered common ground as native New Yorkers and artists, and decided to combine our seemingly separate art forms.
I translate Hens’ tags and drawings into embroidery. I begin by transferring his images, created digitally and with markers on paper, onto fabric. I then “paint” over his marks with stitches: French knots, basket weave, backstitch. The results are dense, colorful canvases that celebrate the unlikely melding of urban imagery and women’s handcrafts.
